KSB SuPremE® motors
(Released for sales from 0.55 to 45 kW rated power in Europe)
High-efficiency motors contribute significantly to high overall efficiency of pump systems. At KSB we use IE2 motors as a standard to be in line with EU regulations. Going beyond these requirements, we offer optional IE3 asynchronous motors or our innovative synchronous KSB SuPremE® motors which further cut the losses of IE3 motors by 15 percent and meet the requirements of the scheduled IE4 standard acc. to IEC60034-30 Ed.2 /2011-5.
Invest in the drive technology of tomorrow.
Our highly efficient KSB SuPremE® motors are an innovative option for pumps up to 45 kW. As well as being highly efficient at rated load, these synchronous motors offer numerous other advantages: they are speed-controlled and highly efficient at low flow; they use fewer resources because they run without permanent magnets and they are just as robust as variable speed asynchronous motors.
Tomorrow's motors – today at KSB.
Today’s KSB SuPremE® series at least loses 15 percent less energy than IE3 motors. As well as standard IE2 models, we can already supply motors that go far beyond future legal efficiency requirements. What is behind it? New worldwide harmonized efficiency classification standards (IEC60034-30)categorize IE1, IE2 and IE3-motors since 2009.New Minimum Efficiency Performance Standards (MEPS) for motors in Europe (incl. Switzerland), USA, China and many further countries are or will become effective to emphasize the intention of the governments to reduce CO2 emissions globally.A new technical specification as a draft to define an IE4-standard has already been released. (See IEC/TS60034-31 Ed. 1 /2010)Today others than asynchronous motors (ASM) like e.g. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) could not achieve a relevant market share within the rotating equipment market, although they reach higher efficiencies. There are mainly three reasons for the dominant position of ASM in the market:
Direct-on-line capability
Robustness
Best cost/performance ratio due to very high quantities
The good cost/performance ratio of the ASM cannot be maintained on an IE3 efficiency level, because an improved design will require:
More copper
More iron
Better bearings
The PMSM technology will gain its advantages. But on the long term the prices of PMSM will be too high to make this motor an adequate substitute due to the need of rare earth elements, which are the raw material needed for the permanent magnets. An innovative substitute will get essential market share: The KSB SuPremE® motor.
Why check out ASM technology?
The new standard IEC 60034-30 sets strict rules for efficiency at the nominal load and nominal speed of motors. In many applications and especially in the pump application the motor is not forced to run at nominal speed and nominal torque by the pump. The ASM’s best efficiency at rated torque, which is displayed on the type plate, is not really effective.A speed controlled operation is an approved instrument to gain higher efficiency in applications with variable flow demand. Costs for drives are decreasing, costs for energy are increasing steadily. For years the ratio of pumps in speed controlled operation is therefore increasing. In that case centrifugal pumps require a quadratic torque over the speed range. The direct-on-line capability of an ASM is no longer required.
What makes KSB SuPremE® motors unique?
Premium Efficiency acc. to IE4 (with reference to IEC/TS60034-31 Ed. 1 /2010-4) at 3000 rpm rated speed and rated torque.
High efficiency also at lower speed and lower torque
As robust as a speed controlled asynchronous motors, due to simple construction and no need of additional sensors
Advantage of speed controlled operation, due to need of PumpDrive
Sustainable, due to no use of any magnets Performance
KSB SuPremE®-motors have a 4-pole design with a rated speed of 3000 rpm @ 100Hz. Variants with 1500 rpm rated speed are also available.
KSB SuPremE® motors always have to be fed by KSB PumpDrive with the KSB SuPremE®-FirmwareAttention: The KSB SuPremE®-Firmware does not provide all functions of PumpDrive with its normal Firmware. Of course a PI-controlled and energy efficient control of a single pump is guaranteed. (For more sophisticated applications an additional controller may be needed.)
Protection class IP55
KSB SuPremE®-motors can be applied to all dry installed pumps outside explosion proof areas with IEC frame code IM B3 or IM B5 (with flange)
Ambient temperature: 40°C
Supply voltage according to technical data of PumpDrive
How does it work?
KSB SuPremE® motors are synchronous reluctance motors with a patented rotor design, which achieve a very low torque ripple of 1-2% and therefore low noise due to a patented control strategy. The mathematical model of the motor within the PumpDrive SuPremE Firmware is such precise, that an error on the shaft position is at +/-1.5% can be guaranteed. Without any sensor which may fail! That’s why the motor can also be used as a robust drive for positioning applications in tooling or textile machines.
The design of KSB SuPremE® motors stator is equal to any stator of an asynchronous motor in 4-pole design. The robustness of this construction is approved in millions of applications. The rotor of the SuPremE motor is assembled by metal sheets with a special patented shape. The shape of the rotor metal sheet stack, with its anisotropic air gaps has a preferred position within the magnetic field of the stator in 4-pole design. The speed control device KSB PumpDrive, which in combination with ASM-motors since more than 6 years is well-proven, controls speed and torque with highest accuracy based on a mathematical model. At 100Hz of frequency of the stator windings, the rotor exactly reaches 3000rpm without any slip. The losses within the rotor are nearly zero.
